Those which we know the dialogues by heart and that always know how to tear a smile or some tears. There may even be one that we have not discovered yet. In this post I will mention what I consider the best old movies.

Gone With the Wind

The film was released on December 15, 1939 and had incredible success; over the years it has become one of the great classics. In all studies of the critics it competes against Casablanca for the best film in the history of cinema. Thanks to this, the story of the novel became a legend of literature, and a myth of popular culture of the twentieth century; the leading couple formed by Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara is one of the great romantic couples of universal literature, at the same level of Romeo and Juliet or Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy.

The great Dictator

The language used by Hinkel in his crazy speeches is not German. This is a jargon improvised by Chaplin that may sound German, but it is not.

It is said that, despite being banned in Nazi-occupied Europe, Adolf Hitler had a copy brought for a private pass. He did not see it once, but twice. He has not transcended his opinion about the film. When Chaplin heard about it, he claimed that “I would have given anything to know what Hitler said when he saw it …”

The idea of making this parody of Hitler came to Chaplin, when he knew that the German tyrant was about the same age and, approximately, his height and weight. In addition, both had emerged from misery to obtain the greatest of triumphs in their respective careers. Another detail was that of Hitler’s mustache, which Chaplin said was convinced that he had copied it from his Charlot character.

The film was banned in Spain until 1975. In Germany it was until 1998, and made an incredible collection for such an old film. In Italy they could not watch it complete until 2002 since the versions that were previously exhibited had censored the scenes of the dictator Napoloni and his wife Rachele. Now you feel curious about watching this movie, right?
